Badass Buy - Maniac Cop 2 Widescreen Edition Laserdisc

You read that title right. Maniac Cop 2. In Widescreen. On Laserdisc.

I never knew this insanely awesome piece of Badass Cinema was ever available in Widescreen as the VHS release as well as the rare and out of print bare bones DVD are both in a bastardly Full Frame aspect ratio. So imagine my excitement when I stumbled upon this beauty only to find that it's in Widescreen! And I'm talking true Widescreen and not some Letterbox format.

I just saw this a few nights ago and the transfer looks impressive, even for Laserdisc standards. Throw in the fact that it's in it's proper aspect ratio and the only way you can see it like this and I am one very happy man. Review coming up shortly.

  3. Now the question is, are the other two parts available in that version as well=?
In Germany, all three parts were released by different distributors...how about that in the states? Badass all the way, love the scene at the shooting range. The whole film is badass.

    1. I know part 1 is easily available in widescreen on both VHS, DVD and Blu-ray. But not sure about Laserdisc and as far as part 3 goes, that one's also easily available. Just not sure if it's in widescreen or not. And yea, that shooting range sequence and the one right after that in the police headquarters is just plain awesome!

    1. Part 1 is on Laserdisc? Niiiiice!
Don't know if they'll still do a 4. Not unless they get someone else to play Matt Cordell or just do a straight-up remake. I've seen Robert Z'Dar recently and he is very overweight and looking old and unhealthy. Bummer.

    1. An awesome find indeed. I never thought I'd get a chance to see this film (the best in the trilogy) in Widescreen, ever!

  7. I hope so too, it's really the best way to see it after having no other option ever since it was released. It gives the film a whole other dimension of Badass Cinema. Lustig really nailed it with this one. Can't wait to hear your take on it.

  8. You know, I bet some people wouldn't mind putting together a fund to pay YOU to send this laserdisc off to someone who can transfer the thing to DVD, and then allow us to buy burned copies from you. As it's pretty damn certain we're never going to see an, uncut widescreen DVD of this. Even though I am shocked Synapse just re-released Basket Case 3 in widescreen today...

    1. You know, that would be the ideal solution. lol. I know a lot of people do that all over the internet. And I'd love to do that, but last thing I need is to be the only guy who gets in trouble for it his first time out.

But, if I can find someone who can transfer a laserdisc to dvd, I'd be more than happy to send you a copy as a gift or trade.

  9. Well I'm currently negotiating with a laser disc seller on the web here to score my own copy of Maniac Cop 2 here. There's a local electronics shop in my town that does all sorts of converting things from one format to a DVD for $15 a pop (well $15 for a 2-hour film transfer). I asked to owner about his policy on copyrighted material, and he says as long as he knows it isn't available on DVD, he dosen't care! So we'll see what happens with this! If I can get the disc, and do the transfer, hell I'll do my uncut Who Framed Roger Rabbit laserdisc as well :D
